Founded by two software engineers (JT Marino and Daehee Park) in 2012, Tuft & Needle began selling mattresses online, later merging with mattress giant Serta Simmons in 2018.
According to their site, Tuft & Needle strives to keep things simple, provide quality craftsmanship and create excellent products for a reasonable price “without the gimmicks.”
The name Tuft & Needle came about when JT Marino learned how to make his first homemade mattress. As the lesson ensued, JT discovered that part of the work involved tufting the mattress with a tufting needle by hand. The name came up during a brainstorming session, and they decided to keep it.
Tuft & Needle also maintains a high level of philanthropy through school fundraising, donating mattresses, employee volunteer efforts, and more.
Tuft & Needle sells three lines of mattresses:
The Original– Comprises two foam layers and the option to add a layer of antimicrobial protection.
The Mint– has three foam layers plus some additional upgrades, including an antimicrobial cover. You can click here to read SleepMoment’s review of the Mint Mattress.
The Hybrid– includes five layers of proprietary foam and springs for optimal support.
The mattresses are the same in that they are all offered through financing, they all have at least 10 inches of foam, and they’re all available for delivery to your doorstep. However, they differ in features, thickness, construction, and firmness.
The Original
This mattress is made of two layers of open-cell foam infused with cooling gel beads and heat-absorbing graphite paired with T&N Adaptive foam. This popular mattress is superior in contouring, temperature-regulating, and sleep-inducing qualities. There is also the option to add an additional layer of HeiQ, a proprietary antimicrobial cover.
The Original’s materials are certified by GREENGUARD Gold, possess an Intertek Clean Air Certification, and have Certi-PUR US certification. They also pass inspection by two parent testing approval organizations. This ensures they are safe, have low standard chemical emissions levels, meet indoor air quality compliance standards, and be free of ozone depleters, harmful chemicals, carcinogens, and PBDEs.
The Mint
The Mint is considered a luxury foam mattress with an additional layer of memory foam (three compared to the Original’s two), ensuring the mattress has superior contouring and top-shelf support, cooling properties, and an antimicrobial cover.
The Mint has GREENGUARD Gold and Intertek Clean Air Certification, the Seal of Approval of two parental approval organizations based on real-life testing, and a Certi-PUR US certification. These guarantee the mattress meets safety and environmental standards set to ensure it has a low level of chemical emissions, meets indoor air quality standards and is free of ozone depleters, harmful chemicals, carcinogens, and PBDEs.
The Hybrid
Add a plush cover and a layer of individually wrapped springs to the original 12-inches of memory foam, and you’ll have a Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress. This mattress is considered Tuft & Needle’s most supportive variety and is combined with a super lush pillow top, graphite, air channels, and more for superior cooling and breathability. It also has excellent edge support, meaning it’s easy to get off the mattress on any side, and superior durability.
The Hybrid meets certification standards for CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold, meaning its foams were tested to emit low VOC and are known to be free of harmful chemicals, carcinogens, PBDEs, and ozone depleters.
