Brand News & History

Tempur-Pedic is one of the best-known mattress brands globally, recognized for its innovative, NASA-developed memory foam technology. Tempur-Pedic was the first to make this science available to the public. Nearly two decades later, the brand continues to rank among the top mattress manufacturers nationwide.

The company’s signature memory foam is a product of the 1960s Space Race. As the company website explains, NASA scientists invented the viscoelastic material, a “slow spring back foam,” to reduce the impact of G-Forces on astronauts’ bodies. Years later, NASA released their formula to the public, and Swedish scientists adapted it for consumers, calling it TEMPUR® material.

In the early 1990s, company founder Bobby Trussell stumbled upon the material while abroad in search of champion racehorses. Immediately impressed, he persuaded the Swedish creators to let him sell the mattresses and pillows stateside. The seedling company began with Trussell selling mattresses out of his car and giving samples to chiropractors and merchandising reps. Today, Tempur-Pedic is a household name.

Tempur-Pedic has stayed true to its roots, evolving and adapting to meet consumers’ needs and respond to new research. As the website explains, this responsive scientific method is what inspired the TEMPUR-breeze line. One of the company’s best-rated products, TEMPUR-breeze features temperature and humidity-control technology.

The company went public in 2003, and in 2012 Tempur-Pedic acquired its competitor, Sealy, to form Tempur Sealy International.

Tempur-Pedic, headquartered in Virginia, also gives back via local and national nonprofits. Recently, the brand has donated money and hundreds of thousands of mattresses to those in need through charities, including Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Network, and Operation Shut Eye.

Current Collections

Tempur-Pedic currently carries five mattress lines: the TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, and TEMPUR-Breeze. All of their mattresses feature the Original Tempur Support layer, which provides the all-over body reinforcement and personalized comfort for which the brand is famous. Each line is also available in a range of sizes, from twin to California king.

TEMPUR-Cloud

TEMPUR-Cloud offers up to 40 percent more pressure relief compared to the closest competing compressed mattress, according to the Tempur-Pedic website.

TEMPUR-Cloud is available in soft or firm. The mattress features a Tempur Comfort Layer on top of the original Tempur Support Layer, topped off by a 360 Stretch Cover with moisture-wicking, airflow-promotion technology.

Among the Tempur-Pedic products, which tend to be rather pricey, TEMPUR-Cloud is one of the most budget-friendly options.

TEMPUR-Adapt

Based on Trussell’s original model, TEMPUR-Adapt is simple and straightforward, providing the benefits of the signature spring back foam without frills. It comes in medium or medium-hybrid firmness and can be customized with a foam or coil base.

TEMPUR-Adapt mattresses include a Tempur-ES Comfort Layer, which provides additional comfort in conjunction with the Original Tempur Support Layer. The Cool-to-Touch cover is made of premium knit technology which provides a cool-to-touch feel and antimicrobial properties for a comfortable and healthy environment.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is similar to the TEMPUR-Adapt but with a few additional assets. It is available in soft, medium, and firm all-foam, as well as a medium-firm hybrid foam and coil.

In addition to the Tempur-ES Comfort Layer, it contains another level, the Tempur-APR Support Layer, for additional all-over reinforcement. This model also features a SmartClimate Dual Cover System, which includes a zip-off cover with antimicrobial properties and a machine washable cool-to-touch outer layer.

TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is similar to the ProAdapt but includes an extra inch of layering for additional support and pressure relief. It is available in soft or firm all-foam.

TEMPUR-breeze

The TEMPUR-breeze collection, which includes PRObreeze and LUXEbreeze, is designed to help sleepers maintain optimal body temperature and body weight support. It features Tempur-CM+ and PURECOOL+ Phase Change Materials designed to filter out heat and humidity.

The LUXEbreeze model is made with Phase Change Technology designed to maintain a temperature 8 degrees cooler than the TEMPUR-Adapt. The PRObreeze is made to maintain a temperature 3 degrees cooler. LUXEbreeze maintains its cooler temperature through an additional ventilated APR layer for enhanced airflow and pressure relief.

In terms of firmness, the PRObreeze is available in medium and medium hybrid, while LUXEbreeze can be either firm or soft. This is Tempur-Pedic’s most-awarded line.

Notable Features

Tempur-Pedic’s most noteworthy feature is its NASA-inspired spring back, body-contouring foam technology. This is what made the brand famous and what continues to set it apart from the majority of mattresses on the market. Other major selling points include the temperature and humidity-control features, which, combined with personalized, all-over body support, make for an extremely comfortable night’s sleep.

Tempur-Pedic’s products are made without ozone-depleting chemicals, PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP flame retardants, formaldehyde, mercury, lead, or any other heavy metals.
