Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Review

Material: Foam Firmness: 6/10 Price: $1,095 (Queen) Trial: 100 Nights Warranty: 10 Years

Tuft and Needle Mint Mattress is a step up from their Original foam mattress. With higher quality materials and technology, the Mint is considered Tuft & Needle’s premier mattress line.

Tuft & Needle boasts their Mint mattress as an affordable option for those looking to buy a high-quality mattress. An antimicrobial treatment from HeiQ (specifically HeiQ NPJO3) combats microorganisms that can cause odor and degradation.

Materials & Construction

The Tuft & Needle Mint contains three layers of foams to support the shoulders, back, and hips. However, the Mint’s softer feel may deter back and stomach sleepers.

Side sleepers and hot sleepers of average weight will enjoy the Mint. The two adaptive layers of foam provide some sink and some bounce. Reviewers have mentioned motion transfer as a lingering issue. Sleepers hyper-sensitive to movement may notice their partner shifting around at night.

Let’s break down the Tuft & Needle Mint layer by layer:

Cover

The Mint’s cover boasts a knit-polyester blend for a thick and soft sensation. It feels cushy and provides a breathable initial layer. The Mint’s cover is treated with HeiQ antimicrobial protection to maintain a clean smell. This protection also extends the Mint’s lifespan.

Top Comfort Layer

A blend of memory foam and latex comprises 3 inches of Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam. This combination lends a soft and bouncy feel without causing Sleepers to sink too deeply.

As mentioned above, graphite-infused foams keep the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress cool.

Middle Transition Layer

Two inches of polyfoam buffer the top comfort layer and the bottom support layer. Side sleepers will sink further into this mattress due to the focused centers of gravity around their shoulders and hips. The transition layer will prevent them from “bottoming out” and hitting the firm support layer below.

This layer responds more to pressure than its predecessor. According to Tuft & Needle, added stacks of cooling beads provide extra support.

Bottom Support Layer

Seven inches of polyfoam provides additional lift and support. Four of those are extra-firm foam. This foam layer, standard among pure-foam mattresses, lends itself to side sleepers.

Firmness

The Tuft & Needle Mint rates 6/10, putting it at a medium-firm level while leaning towards the plush side. One reviewer noted the Mint to be “plusher” than they expected.

This plushness comes from the two adaptive foam/latex layers. Those layers provide the cradling effect one expects from a pure-foam bed.

Sleep Position & Pressure Relief

In general, mattresses split sleep styles down the middle. Side sleepers prefer plush mattresses because they relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips. Back, stomach, and combo sleepers favor a mattress with more overall support and lean toward hybrid mattresses.

Where one needs the most support plays a critical role in choosing a mattress. Shoppers should also account for their sleep position. They should also consider whether they change positions while sleeping.

Side Sleepers

The Tuft & Needle Mint is best suited for side sleepers. The top two layers of adaptive foam will allow their shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress while providing relief. However, heavy-set side sleepers (over 230 pounds) may require more overall support.

Back Sleepers

Those who prefer sleeping on their back will find decent support in the Mint but should shop around before committing. Again, those over 230 pounds will need something on the firmer side.

The top layer offers decent support to the lumbar region, while the medium-firm prevents sinking too deeply. As a result, back sleepers will find their spines stay aligned on the Tuft & Needle Mint.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers should avoid the Tuft & Needle Mint and opt for their Hybrid Mattress. The Mint will not provide them with adequate support. Heavy-set stomach sleepers will also fare better with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.

Temperature Control & Breathability

The graphite-infused adaptive foam top layer is meant to keep sleepers cool at night. Those who find themselves overheating or waking up warm will enjoy the Mint’s cooling capabilities.

The gel-infused middle transition layer adds to the mattress’s overall breathability. Hot sleepers looking for a breathable mattress should always keep an eye out for gel and graphite-infused foams, as they provide key cooling components. These materials increase airflow and prevent heat from getting trapped inside.

Feel & Bounce

The latex/foam combination gives the Mint more bounce than traditional foam mattresses. This bounce makes the Mint a viable option for sexually active couples who prefer responsiveness.

Overall, the Tuft & Needle Original offers a more plush feel, while the Hybrid provides more responsiveness. The Mint sits happily in the middle.

Motion Isolation

The Tuft & Needle Mint isolates motion well, but light sleepers may be disturbed by their partner’s movements. The polyfoam absorbs most vibrations.

Edge Support

As mentioned above, the Tuft & Needle Mint features 4 inches of extra-firm foam around the edges. Traditionally, pure-foam mattresses do not offer edge support.

Of course, the Mint is still a pure-foam mattress. Heavier individuals will still notice some sinkage near the edge.

Durability

The Tuft & Needle Mint comes with a ten-year warranty protecting the mattress against indents greater than three quarters of an inch in the foam. The warranty also covers visible cracking and splitting of the foam. The high-quality nature of Tuft & Needles materials should provide between seven and ten years of use.
