Avocado Mattress Brand Review

Company Resource Guide

Brand News & History

Avocado’s founders established the company in 2016 in response to demand for a comfortable, quality “green” mattress people could actually afford.

Operating with the mantra “natural, safe, and responsible,” they proceeded to create a mattress made of natural, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and organic materials. Today, Avocado also offers additional models and accessories, including mattress toppers, sheets, pillows, bed frames, and furniture.

According to the company website, Avocado dedicates itself to utilizing eco-conscious, sustainable, and ethical practices throughout its supply chain, with equal emphasis on protecting people and the planet.

Avocado is a Certified B Corporation, indicating they uphold the “highest standards of verified social end environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose,” per the B Labs website.

Avocado also donates 1 percent of revenue to eco-focused non-profits. Per the company website, they donate 90 percent of returned mattresses and all returned pillows.

Current Collections

Avocado currently offers three mattress product lines in sizes twin to California king and split California king as well as two product lines for cribs. All products contain certified organic, non-toxic, sustainable materials.

Avocado Latex Mattress: This is the company’s first foam latex mattress and, and per the website, it’s the firmest and most sustainable. It features 9 inches of foam and a unique patent-pending design for optimal comfort and responsiveness. You can read SleepMoment’s review of the Avocado Latex Mattress here.

Avocado Green Mattress:
The Avocado Green Mattress has nearly 15,000 positive reviews on the company website and has earned consistently high rankings from publications such as U.S. News & World Report, Apartment Therapy, and Health.

It features certified-organic materials and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils which, as with the latex mattress, are organized in five zones to provide spinal alignment and pain relief. Because it is a hybrid, it stays cooler than some foam models.

Avocado Vegan Mattress:
The hybrid Avocado Vegan Mattress is PETA-approved and features the same certified organic and sustainable ingredients, with cotton instead of wool.

Like the Avocado Green Mattress, it is medium-firm and contains up to 1,414 pocketed coils in five zones with no polyurethane, polyester, or toxic fire retardants, per the website.

Organic Crib Mattress:
The Organic Crib Mattress is just under $300 and features organic, safe, and non-toxic materials. With a dual-sided design and different firmness levels, it is suitable for infants and toddlers.

Luxury Organic Crib Mattress:
The Luxury Organic Crib Mattress, part of Avocado’s Conscious Luxury Collection, features the same two-stage design as its less expensive counterpart, as well as organic materials and 170 cotton-wrapped coils, per the website.

Notable Features

Avocado is not only well-known for its commitment to sustainability and ethically sound practices. According to reviewers, the brand also makes exceptional quality mattresses.

In addition to the certified organic, all-natural, non-toxic materials and handmade design, Avocado’s products are heralded for their superior comfort and all-over body support. This is one reason the American Chiropractic Association endorses the brand.

Materials & Sourcing

Avocado appears to be as dedicated to its social and ecological causes as its production of affordable, quality products.

Avocado is one of only five American mattress companies to have earned certification from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).

The GOTS certification indicates Avocado and its supply chain are independently verified to meet ecological and social criteria. Similarly, the GOLS certification validates Avocado’s latex and latex foam are organic and harvested and manufactured using environmentally and socially responsible processes.

The brand also operates under a farm-to-mattress credo. Avocado raises 180,000 sheep on 40,000 hectares of land in the Himachal Pradesh region of northern India, per the company website.

According to the site, the wool the sheep produce is sustainably and ethically harvested to produce Avocado Green Mattresses, Luxury Crib mattresses, Organic Crib mattresses, and toppers.

Avocado also co-owns the Avocado Organic Latex processing facility and manages more than 4,000 acres of latex farms in Kochi. The rubber harvested from this land is used to make the brand’s latex foam for its mattresses and toppers.

In Rampur, Avocado operates a GOTS organic certified wool factory that employs several women, many of whom are domestic violence survivors, to support their independence. The wool is naturally cleaned and processed without chemicals.
